The Outrageous Media Rehabilitation of Donald Trump

You’d be forgiven for thinking that you’d stepped into another reality post July 13th 2024, the moment a deranged assassin took aim at Donald Trump and came within inches of killing him, but ultimately only succeeded in clipping his right ear.

I say that because judging by the media reaction since, they all seem to have magically forgotten that Mr Trump is…ahem…a rapist who bragged about “grabbing women by the pussy”, a vile misogynist in general who’s repeatedly demeaned and insulted the looks of women he doesn’t like and now openly supports heavily banning their safe access to abortion, a racist who has repeatedly demonised and generalised immigrants from countries like Mexico as “rapists and murderers”, previously called for the deaths of black men wrongly accused of a crime, previously refused to rent to black tenants, defended open pro-confederacy white supremacist murderers and spent an unhealthy amount of time questioning whether Obama was really born in the US, a dangerous authoritarian who repeatedly attacked the press as President and incited a violent mob of insane cultish thugs to storm the US capitol to straight up overturn the result of the 2020 US Election (which he lost), a man who has openly admitted in the past to perving on underage girls and has been exposed as having an association with Jeffery Epstein, a staunch supporter and stooge of Russian Dictator Vladimir Putin and an opponent of US assistance in Ukraine, a convicted felon with numerous other serious charges waiting in the wings for him, a transphobe who banned transgender people from joining the military and a suicidally dangerous climate change denier who spent his Presidency ripping up any and all environmental protections. That’s all just for starters, but I’ll leave it for now.

This assassination attempt (which, for the record, barely harmed the orange rat at all and he was indeed back playing Golf literally a day later) has seemingly caused the establishment news media’s brains to melt in the name of pointless “civility”, seeking to encourage everyone to “tone down their rhetoric” towards the KFC-munching fuckwit. Not just in the US but bizarrely over here in the UK as well, where Trump is outright disliked by 67%, and whose mainstream parties (Labour and Conservative) both outright reject his dangerous authoritarian pandering to Christian Nationalism which he has intensified with his 2024 platform.

The most utterly galling moment of this wasn’t even when Foreign Secretary David Lammy came under fire in the past week for previously in 2018 referring to Trump as a “woman-hating, neo-Nazi-sympathising sociopath”, which, exactly for the reasons I’ve outlined above, is COMPLETELY FUCKING TRUE! Like, it’s not even subjective. Yet Lammy is apparently expected to reverse his stance on this because the poor little wannabe dictator and fascist nearly died.

Nor even was it Sky News’ utterly disgraceful headline, referring to Trump’s Republican Convention speech, of “We have seen a different version of Donald Trump this week, a man humbled by his brush with death”, a disgraceful bare faced lie that blatantly ignored how he spent most of the speech after his virtue signalling words about “unity” spreading fear and division towards his political opponents and minority groups as per usual. This one in particularly seemed to receive the most backlash from confused people who still live in reality, the tweet receiving 4000 (largely negative) replies compared to just 1000 likes.

No, the most utterly outrageous pack of nonsense from these pandering wankers came from Sky News’ Trevor Phillips, when he startlingly asked the former Deputy-Mayor of London, James Murray, if he “regrets insulting Trump” in reference to the legendary moment in 2018 when London “welcomed” Trump on his state visit to the city with a balloon depicting him as a giant orange baby. Yes Trevor, you vapid prat, Donald Trump was definitely shot (by a fellow Republican no less, as it turned out) because the Brits made fun of him that one time. So toxic, am I right? Thankfully Murray didn’t cowardly back down in the same way Labour figures have done and replied that he did not regret it. Which is the normal response to such an utterly INSANE question.

All this seems even more insane when you realise that Trump has been the primary force behind divisive, inflammatory politics in near enough every speech he makes. In fact, when US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband was brutally attacked with a hammer in 2023, Trump responded with horrible mockery. So why the sudden insistence that “the left tone down their rhetoric towards anyone they disagree with” as if Trump hasn’t been the main one provoking the anger? How can the media spend so much time attacking Trump themselves as a massively dangerous bigot (because…he is one) but then try to treat him like a normal politician once something bad happens to him? Why is everyone salivating over the supposedly “epic” photo displayed above as if it’s some kind of iconic moment and a big boost for Trump’s image, while the reality is absolutely NOBODY who hated Trump’s guts before is going to magically change their minds because he looked “badass” after surviving a shooting attempt? It’s absolutely genuinely bonkers and out of touch with reality. If something bad would happen to Putin, or any other despot across the globe, would they react the same way? Obviously not. But because Trump could soon be President of “our biggest ally”, they all fall in line!

Don’t just mistake this as something only “liberals” or centrists do either. There seems to also be an epidemic of Trump rehabilitation among social media leftists, particularly on Twitter, attempting to strangely downplay how uniquely terrible Trump is because they view the US entirely as totally evil. A strange mindset for sure.

The most blatantly hypocritical example of this came from contrarian extraordinaire, Shaun (someone who doesn’t even live in the US, incidentally, so probably feels a position of massive privilege that he isn’t a minority or LGBT person who lives there), who magically in 2 years went from (unprovoked) predicting “liberals” will rehabilitate Trump like they did Bush (for one, a massively dumb comparison as Bush was always “friendly” with the establishment Democrats in Congress regardless of their political differences or whatever terrible things he did, so of course he’s treated nicer by them, while Trump on the hand has been straight up their enemy) to suddenly and rather laughably tweeting out himself later down the line “Trump was a pretty average President”. Of course, he followed that provocative rage bait Tweet with an explanation that he basically thinks all US Presidents were awful and Trump “didn’t do anything out of the ordinary compared to his recent predeccesors. Not only is that still blatantly hypocritical as he mocked “liberals” in his first Tweet for doing the “he wasn’t so bad compared to the new guy” rhetoric then proceeded to do it himself.

But the idea that Trump was no different to other Presidents is just insanity and does nothing but paint a conspiratorial version of politics that they’re all in it for themselves and depresses people from voting. No other President was so explictly a fascist who used inflammatory, hateful language towards other groups and his political opponents and who tried to overturn a democratic election. No other President so blatantly mismanaged government departments by appointing his own personal partisan suck-ups who knew nothing about their job role. No other President was so existentially destructive to the environment, particularly in a key period of acceleration of Climate Change. No other President performed authoritarian type crackdowns on the press. No other President was as corrupt, with one new scandal seemingly per week. No other President (in recent memory of course) came out and defended white supremacist murderers. It’s all very clear cut and pointing out single issue terrible things past Presidents did doesn’t make things any different.

None of that is even the worst example. There’s an odd leftist trend particularly among the online American left to act like Trump is in fact more left wing or not as bad as his Democrat opponents, which is blatantly laughable. The most galling was when Current Affairs editor, “leftist” union buster and grown up Randall from Recess, Nathan J Robinson tweeted out a prediction that Trump, the same Trump whose entire voter base is largely comprised of evangelicals or nationalists who support Israel unconditionally, the same Trump who hasn’t exactly been shy about not bothering to appeal to anyone outside of his loony base, would end up shifting to a more liberal position than Biden on the atrocities in Gaza . That’s just such a laughable, risible and deliberately inflammatory point of view it’s not even worth seriously addressing, especially given Trump’s OWN STATEMENTS on it and consistently cushy relationship with Netanyahu, yet he refused to budge from this. Presumably this type of nonsense is yet another attempt to convince people it doesn’t matter voting and it may even be preferable going for Trump over a Democrat because they’re all the same anyway. Me personally, I think if I was an American voter and I was given a straight choice between a blatant fascist and one who…isn’t, I’d go for the latter. Just a hot take there! Please revoke my left leaning licence because I think not all US politicians are equal.

Now obviously, I personally condemn all political violence and indeed senseless violence like that of any kind, not least because an assassination of Trump would only intensify his vile movement even more. The point of this post is to get my utter frustration with the general treatment of that awful cretin as a normal politcal figure off my chest, and highlight the absurdity of it from both the mainstream media and online activists. It is utterly facetious at this point, especially with Project 2025 looming on the horizon should Trump defeat Kamala Harris in November (which remains possible), to act like Trump isn’t a despot and a fascist and indeed an ordinary politician who lies and does bad things occassionally, simply because he’s running in a democratic country. As I’ve outlined, it’s just not remotely true.

He’s a narcissist entirely interested in himself and specifically now interested in staying out of prison, and who will go to any length to achieve that, including pushing blatant socially reactionary policies and appealing wholeheartedly to the absolutely insane (mainly southern, racist and religious) base that the Republican Party has spent decades foolishly and cynically pandering to, to the point where that base has now practically entirely taken over the mainstream right wing party. And his own personal insecurity has resulted in further authoritarian tendencies, from spreading “election fraud” conspiracy theories and attacking and demonising the media.

He does not deserve your sympathy or deserve a “scaling down in tone” in rhetoric towards him. Continue calling him what he is.
